Think Longterm. While spending less on your packaging would be ideal, durability is really important long term. Especially when it comes to packaging for potatoes and other agricultural products, you don’t want your product to be dressed in a cheap package that won’t even keep well on a shelf. If customers repetitively see that your product is damaged on the shelf, they are going to think negatively about your brand as whole. Do you want to be seen as cheap? I didn’t think so.

Consider the world. Working in agriculture means that, hopefully, you care about nature as much as you care about creating your quality produce. Because of this natural connection, we recommend that all packaging for potato growers be eco-friendly and sustainable. It’s a smart move because it shows customers that you care about the earth that helps provide for you.

Think about how, physically, your product will be packaged. Don’t make the mistake of seeing the packaging only empty. How does it look with actual product in it? Is it too tight? Too empty? Will it need to be packaged by hand, or will an automatic assembly line be able to take care of it? When designing the packaging for your product, it’s really important to consider the full final product. Also, if the product doesn’t look good itself, but tastes amazing, consider keeping the product itself not displayed on the final potato bag or box.

Be purposeful with your materials. Things like high quality paper, or even a wax seal, can make your product stand out. Don’t only think about your design as what it looks like physically. Touch can have a huge impact when a customer is choosing between a few products. It also adds more of a premium association with your products and people remember quality.

Along the same lines, consider your shelf appeal. Now that you are thinking about how your brand looks and feels, consider how it will look on a shelf. Do you want to stand out or blend in? How does your packaging look next to the competition? Think strategically about all the little details that make your brand distinctive before your product is in stores because it’s extremely important to your success.

Don’t forget what your product is like at home. Having stunning branded packaging for potato growers is one thing, but is it user friendly? Is it difficult to open? Easy to close? Does it keep your food fresh? Getting someone to buy a product is one thing, but encouraging them to keep buying is another. Make sure every part of their experience with your brand is the best it can be.

And of course, keep it personal. The little details are always the most memorable, so give your packaging little personal details. Things like handwritten fonts or even individually hand-tied labels can give your brand a really sweet touch that is worth remembering for customers. Frequent buyers want to feel connected to a brand and add those little aspects can create a life-long impact.

That concludes part 2 of our piece on the 14 important factors in branded potato packaging. Look through both parts again to come up with the design strategy that works for you.
